Fire Queen unpicks the concept of burnout and exhaustion and being burnt emotionally. Burnt right down to the ground, only to grow back stronger. Like a lodgepole pine tree seed using fire to germinate and emerge.
It takes the viewer on a journey along the road of recovery and encourages better self care.
We are all a little bit broken and in need of repair.
Individual pieces have been salvaged and are shown at various stages of restoration. Some raw and charred, others wrapped tightly. Mending areas are highlighted in 24ct gold leaf, golden aluminium, and real gold lacquered kimono thread. These layers are stacked and bound firmly but tenuously, deepening the meaning of 'held together by a thread'.
The small crackled piece with golden wire wedged in was reclaimed from the remnants of a found camp fire. Possibly a side board or chest of drawers, by the looks of the leftover ashes and embers.
The embroidered square started as a cotton blouse - damaged beyond repair - now aglow with a rice like pattern of stitches in vintage gold thread from Japan. This silk thread would have been coated with urushi lacquer, flattened into a fine ribbon, and then gilded with twenty-four carat gold leaf.
