Disruptions in conversation took over a year to come into being.
It travelled the country whilst in progress, worked upon in the car (as a passenger), at the beach soaking up the sunshine, during co-working sessions, and whilst waiting for the kettle to boil; at luxuriant meet-ups with delicious coffee and cake, from the car boot - whilst sat looking out at Macclesfield Forest, after a run, and with a sleepy child resting beneath it's soft folds.
All the while, she was listening. Absorbing words and memories. Highs and lows, low-lows, and today is a good day. This pre-conceived women's work, stitching, during words exchanged with the community of women in my life. Holding things together, care and duty, duty of care, love, communication, listening, responding, or not, and becoming.
All of these moments in time, conversations often paused or interrupted, from days, weeks, months, measured in dots and dashes, sewn into cloth.
Made entirely from reclaimed silks, marked or torn saris gone beyond repair, and torn cotton and denim.
Running stitches in faded wheaten colour fibres, painstakingly removed from the heedles of a Jacquard loom in Paradise Mill (during renovations to the looms), now strengthen worn areas of reclaimed silk and cotton.
Thousands of stitches in Daruma black, and Olympus greige cotton sashiko thread scatter the rest of the surface. With the matte rice like marks giving texture, and quietly lending the salvaged materials their strength and resilience.
